In a major boost to the local economy and retail landscape, Target Corporation is set to return to Brown Deer with a brand-new, state-of-the-art store that will anchor a transformative $21 million redevelopment project known as the Marketplace of Brown Deer.

The Minneapolis-based retail giant has acquired a 9.6-acre site at 9020, 9070, 9074, and 9080 North Green Bay Road for $7 million, with plans to open a 128,000-square-foot Target store. The new location is slated to open by late 2026, according to local officials, and will serve as a cornerstone for the revitalization of a long-struggling retail corridor.

A Long-Awaited Return

The announcement marks Target’s comeback to Brown Deer after it closed its previous store on West Brown Deer Road in 2016. The closure had left a noticeable void in local retail offerings, and residents have since called for the brand’s return.

“This project represents a turning point for Brown Deer,” said Nate Piotrowski, the village’s Community Development Director. “The new Target is not just another store; it’s a statement that this community is growing, modernizing, and investing in its future.”

Led by Woodsonia Real Estate

The redevelopment is being spearheaded by Woodsonia Real Estate, a Nebraska-based developer with a growing portfolio of commercial and residential projects across the Midwest. The Marketplace of Brown Deer spans approximately 23 acres and will include:

  • The new Target store
  • 100 market-rate apartments
  • Over 21,000 square feet of additional commercial and retail space
  • Three outlots for potential restaurants, cafes, or service-based businesses
  • The broader project will replace an aging shopping center with modern mixed-use amenities, positioning Brown Deer as a more dynamic and livable suburb of Milwaukee.

Target's Strategic Expansion

The Brown Deer store is part of Target’s nationwide strategy to open 300 new locations over the next decade. These openings focus on enhancing customer convenience and experience, including flexible store formats, modern interiors, and community-focused services.

A Target spokesperson confirmed the plans, noting:

“We’re excited to bring a new Target store to the Brown Deer community. This project reflects our long-term commitment to investing in locations that meet our guests’ needs while contributing to local revitalization efforts.”

Community and Economic Impact

The return of Target is expected to stimulate economic activity in Brown Deer, creating hundreds of jobs during both the construction and operational phases. The apartments included in the redevelopment will further support demand for local retail and services.

The project also aims to tackle the high commercial vacancy rate that has challenged the area for years. With a national retail anchor like Target on board, developers and city officials are optimistic about attracting additional businesses and improving the overall vitality of the neighborhood.

Construction is anticipated to begin later this year, pending final approvals. The Target store is expected to open by Q4 2026, with the surrounding residential and commercial elements likely to follow shortly after.

“This is a strategic win for the entire North Shore region,” added Piotrowski. “It’s the kind of development that not only meets today’s retail and housing needs but also sets the stage for sustained growth and community pride.”
