Kareem's own focus has been on ECC's core contracting arm and its push toward digital and Lean-style operating methods, an approach less common at contracting firms that tend to run on more traditional site management practices. That has meant digitizing a lot of what used to run on paper, from procurement to project tracking, and pushing the company toward prefabrication and modular building methods on projects where they make sense, particularly given how extreme site conditions in the Gulf can slow down conventional on-site construction.
The wider ECC Group now includes several sister companies built up over the decades: an interior fit-out and joinery arm, an electromechanical and plumbing business, a real estate development company, a metal and aluminium manufacturer, a facilities management arm, and more recently a materials business built around an unusual product, a building board made from palm frond biomass rather than wood. That last one reflects a broader push within the group to develop construction materials suited to the region rather than relying entirely on imported alternatives, an area Kareem has flagged as a priority for the company's future direction.
ECC's project list over the decades includes some recognisable names in Dubai, from civic landmarks like the Dubai Clock Tower and Zabeel Park to more recent residential and mixed-use developments around Dubai Creek Harbour and the wider city. That mix of older civic work and newer high-rise and mixed-use development reflects how much the group's client base has shifted over its history, from government infrastructure projects toward private residential and hospitality developments as Dubai's construction market has matured.
Kareem has spoken about balancing that mix of legacy projects and newer diversification as one of the more difficult parts of running a business this size, keeping the core contracting arm competitive on pricing and delivery while also giving newer divisions like the materials business room to grow on their own. As a family-run group moving into a new generation of leadership, ECC's approach has leaned toward organic expansion, building new capabilities in-house rather than through acquisition, while keeping the contracting business that the group was originally built around at the center of its operations.
