Salalah, Oman – August 8, 2025 - Oman’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has announced the launch of Future Salalah City, a transformative urban development project that will span over 7 million square metres and provide 12,000 housing units. The city is designed to accommodate approximately 60,000 residents, offering a sustainable, high-density living environment along the scenic Al-Tawiyyah coastal strip.

The announcement was made during a field update in Dhofar by Ahmed al Kamyani, Director General of Lands at the Ministry, who emphasized the project’s strong environmental and social integration goals.

Nature-Conscious Urban Planning

“The city is being developed according to high environmental and urban planning standards,” said al Kamyani. “Its design respects the characteristics of the site, ensuring a balanced relationship between built-up areas and natural features.”

Situated in a region known for its coastal lagoons (khors) and ecological sensitivity, Future Salalah City has been carefully planned to integrate with the natural landscape, blending modern urban design with the unique geography of Dhofar.

To prevent urban sprawl, the development will prioritize high-density residential zones while maintaining green corridors, open spaces, and coastal protection buffers. The layout is aimed at promoting social cohesion, family stability, and environmentally responsible living.

Public–Private Investment and Infrastructure Focus

Future Salalah City will feature comprehensive public infrastructure, including transport links, education and healthcare facilities, community centers, and public parks. These elements are designed to ensure livability, accessibility, and long-term sustainability.

“The project opens up a broad range of investment opportunities for all categories of private sector investors,” al Kamyani added, highlighting its role in stimulating public–private partnerships in real estate and infrastructure development.

Details regarding ownership mechanisms for residential and commercial units will be announced at a later stage, according to the Ministry.

Aligned with Oman Vision 2040

Future Salalah City is a key pillar of Oman’s national urban strategy under Oman Vision 2040, which aims to foster sustainable urbanisation, enhance coastal zone resilience, and promote economic diversification, particularly in the Dhofar Governorate.

By combining long-term planning with environmental stewardship and investment attraction, the city is expected to become a model for future coastal developments in Oman and the broader Gulf region.
