George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s long-awaited Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has officially opened in Los Angeles, nearly 17 years after the project began.
In this Property News International feature, we look inside the new museum designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, a five-story, approximately 300,000-square-foot building in Exposition Park. Reported investment in the project exceeds $1 billion.
The museum contains more than 100,000 square feet of exhibition space across over 30 galleries, bringing together painting, photography, illustration, comics and cinema. The collection includes works by Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo and Artemisia Gentileschi, alongside materials from the Lucas Archives and the first six Star Wars films.
Its architecture is defined by a flowing exterior made from more than 1,200 individually shaped panels, while a 185-foot central arch creates a covered public gathering space beneath the building.
The wider 13-acre campus also includes 11 acres of park and gardens, two theaters, a free public research library and outdoor sculpture.
