Milan, Italy – August 4, 2025 - After months of exploring alternative locations and shelving plans to renovate the iconic Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, AC Milan and Inter Milan have officially submitted a joint proposal to construct a new stadium within the San Siro area, signaling a new era for Italian football infrastructure.

According to Il Giorno, the two Serie A giants aim to build a 71,500-seat stadium, with an estimated investment exceeding €1 billion, which includes the cost of acquiring the land. A detailed 200-page plan, submitted by AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni, outlines the full scope of the redevelopment, which would preserve only select portions of the existing venue, specifically part of the Curva Sud and the ‘Orange Sector.’

Timeline and Municipal Review

Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala spoke to RTL 102.5, via Adnkronos, detailing the municipality’s interactions with the clubs and the next steps involved.

“Before the summer, we tried to convince them to restructure San Siro. We worked on it for a few months, but they said it was too expensive. They started devising their plan and told us in November that they were interested in buying the arena and its nearby zones. We begun the technical discussions to examine a few elements.”

The city will now review the offer to assess whether it aligns with public interest and property valuation. However, construction will not begin immediately due to an important milestone: the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“The law says that we have to analyze the offer first and see if it matches the evaluation. Then we’ll have to make a public decree. Nothing will happen until the Olympics, which will kick off on February 6th, 2026. The opening ceremony will take place there. Then they’ll start building the new structure next to it, and it’ll take a few years. Afterward, they’ll regenerate the present one. It’s bound to live at least until 2030.”

A Phased Redevelopment

Based on current estimates, construction would begin post-2026 Olympics, with targeted completion between 2027 and 2030. Once the new venue is operational, redevelopment of the historic Giuseppe Meazza Stadium would follow, ensuring that football continues in the San Siro district throughout the entire process.

The move represents a significant shift in strategy for both clubs, who previously struggled to gain traction with various stadium proposals. The collaborative nature of this new plan signals both clubs’ commitment to remaining in San Siro while modernizing their facilities to match international standards.

This project is not only about football, it’s a broader urban development vision aimed at revitalizing the San Siro neighborhood, aligning with the city’s infrastructure evolution and global event readiness.
