Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - September 7, 2025 - Global design firm LAVA (Laboratory for Visionary Architecture) has unveiled its ambitious masterplan for Expo 2030 Riyadh, reimagining the event as a catalyst for long-term urban transformation and sustainable growth.
Rather than focusing solely on the six-month global exhibition, the concept masterplan positions Expo 2030 as a legacy project, creating a new urban district that will serve Riyadh and its residents for decades to come.
At the heart of LAVA’s design is the natural landscape of Wadi Al Sulai, which forms the backbone of the entire site. The wadi-led layout replaces conventional city grids with flowing, organic corridors that promote shaded walkways, biodiversity, and natural cooling methods perfectly adapted to Riyadh’s desert climate.
This approach ensures that Expo 2030 becomes more than just an event venue — it will be a thriving ecosystem integrated into the city’s fabric.
The masterplan is organised into five “petal” districts radiating out from a central plaza, each representing one of the Expo’s core themes:
This arrangement creates clear zones for visitors while maintaining connectivity and seamless movement throughout the site.
The design uses fractal geometry to optimise airflow, natural light, and spatial harmony. These patterns extend across the buildings, pathways, and landscaping, reflecting the project’s commitment to both aesthetic beauty and functional sustainability.
A pedestrian-first mobility network, known as the World Avenue Loop, links all five districts. This system prioritises walkability and low-impact transport options, reducing environmental disruption while making the Expo easily accessible for millions of visitors.
LAVA’s vision ensures that once the exhibition concludes, the site will transition into a vibrant mixed-use urban district. The restored natural wadis, rewilded landscapes, and green infrastructure will continue to serve as an ecological and cultural hub for Riyadh.
By integrating sustainability, innovation, and community needs, Expo 2030 Riyadh aims to set a new global benchmark for how World Expos can create lasting impact.
This masterplan reinforces Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions, showcasing the Kingdom’s commitment to forward-thinking design and positioning Riyadh as a leader in future-ready urban development.
