U.S. aerospace startup JetZero has announced plans to invest $4.7 billion to build its first manufacturing plant and corporate headquarters at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro. This ground-breaking facility will produce the company’s next-generation Z4 blended-wing aircraft and is projected to create over 14,500 jobs between 2027 and 2036, making it the largest job commitment in North Carolina’s history .
The Z4 aircraft represents a major leap in design, with a blended-wing (all-wing) configuration offering up to 50% improved fuel efficiency over traditional tube-and-wing models. Seating approximately 250 passengers, the Z4 also features a quieter cabin, wider fuselage, and larger boarding doors, designed to enhance the passenger experience.
The jet will initially use conventional jet fuel with the potential for future conversion to hydrogen propulsion, a step towards sustainable aviation.
JetZero has raised around $300 million, including a grant from the U.S. Air Force to support demonstrator aircraft development, expected to fly by 2027.
Major airlines like United Airlines and Alaska Airlines have also placed conditional purchase agreements for up to 200 Z4 jets—including 100 firm orders and options for 100 more.
Economic Impact & Incentives North Carolina Governor Josh Stein praised the project, stating, “North Carolina was first in flight. We are also the future of flight”.
The initiative is backed by over $1.1 billion in state-level, performance-based incentives spanning nearly four decades, plus $450 million allocated for airport infrastructure improvements.
Additional investments include $785 million from Guilford County and Greensboro along with state legislative support.
The project is expected to support 14,500 jobs, with average salaries over $89,000, and includes a research center focused on composite structures.
North Carolina already hosts over 400 aerospace companies, and this plant aligns with recent industrial investments in electric vehicles and supersonic jet development in the Piedmont Triad region.
JetZero aims to begin full-scale production of the Z4 in the early 2030s, targeting 20 aircraft per month at peak capacity—aiming to carve a niche in the aviation industry dominated by Boeing and Airbus.
CEO Tom O’Leary emphasized that the plant is more than just a factory: “It’s a launchpad for a new chapter of American aerospace”.
