The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the brainchild of filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, is approaching its long-anticipated opening in Los Angeles's Exposition Park. Originally slated for a 2025 debut, the museum's inauguration has been rescheduled for 2026 due to pandemic-related delays and supply chain challenges.

A Monument to Storytelling

Spanning approximately 300,000 square feet, the five-story museum is designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, with Stantec serving as the executive architect. The structure features over 100,000 square feet of gallery space, two state-of-the-art theaters, ten learning studios, a library, a restaurant, a café, and retail spaces. The building's futuristic design is clad in over 1,500 unique fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels, creating its distinctive, flowing form.

Curated Collections and Exhibits

The museum's collection encompasses a diverse range of narrative art forms, including paintings, sculptures, photography, comic art, book and magazine illustrations, and cinematic arts. Notable acquisitions include works by artists such as Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, and Robert Colescott. Additionally, the museum houses the Separate Cinema Archive, a collection of over 37,000 items documenting African American cinema history.

Leadership and Organizational Changes

In early 2025, the museum underwent significant leadership restructuring. Sandra Jackson-Dumont stepped down as Director and CEO, with her responsibilities divided between George Lucas, who now oversees content direction, and Jim Gianopulos, former chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, serving as interim CEO.

Community Engagement and Education

Despite recent layoffs affecting 14% of its full-time staff, including members of the education and public programming departments, the museum maintains that education remains a central pillar of its mission. The facility includes ten classrooms, a library, and two theaters designed to support educational initiatives and community engagement.

The museum's opening in 2026 is highly anticipated by art enthusiasts and the broader community alike.
