Abu Dhabi has achieved a significant milestone by securing the fifth position in the 2025 IMD Smart City Index, climbing five spots from its previous ranking. This advancement underscores the city's commitment to enhancing urban living through technological integration and sustainable development.
The IMD Smart City Index evaluates 146 cities worldwide, focusing on residents' perceptions of infrastructure and technological services. Abu Dhabi's improved ranking reflects its substantial investments in public amenities and digital connectivity.
Key factors contributing to this achievement include the expansion of green spaces and the enhancement of public transportation systems. In 2024, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) inaugurated over 200 parks and beaches, with approximately 84% of surveyed residents expressing satisfaction with these facilities. Additionally, the city's public transport network recorded over 90 million bus rides and more than 168,000 water transport passengers, indicating a robust and efficient mobility infrastructure.

Digital initiatives have also played a pivotal role. The 'Hala Wi-Fi' program provides free public Wi-Fi across buses, beaches, and parks, with nearly 75% of respondents acknowledging its positive impact on public services.
His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the DMT, remarked, "Over the past five years, Abu Dhabi has steadily climbed the world’s smart city rankings, moving from 14th place in 2020 to 5th place this year. This is a major achievement for the whole of Abu Dhabi and further cements our position as one of the best places in the world to live, work, and visit."
The city's commitment to innovation is further exemplified by the implementation of 'smart parks,' equipped with over 1,400 sensors monitoring variables such as soil humidity and air quality, enhancing both sustainability and visitor experience.
