Etihad Rail, the UAE's national railway network, is poised to revolutionize transportation across the Emirates with the launch of its passenger services in 2026. This ambitious project aims to connect 11 key cities, offering a fast, efficient, and sustainable mode of travel that will significantly reduce commute times and bolster regional connectivity.

High-Speed Connectivity Across the Emirates

The upcoming passenger service will feature trains capable of reaching speeds up to 200 km/h, dramatically cutting travel times between major urban centers. A notable highlight is the planned high-speed rail link between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, designed to operate at speeds of up to 350 km/h, reducing the journey to just 30 minutes. This line will pass through strategic locations, including Reem Island, Saadiyat Island, Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, and areas near Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Jaddaf in Dubai.

Extensive Network and Strategic Station Locations

The Etihad Rail network will span approximately 1,200 kilometers, connecting cities such as Al Sila, Al Ruwais, Al Mirfa, Dubai, Sharjah, Al Dhaid, Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Confirmed passenger stations include Sakamkam in Fujairah's city center and a site near University City of Sharjah. While exact locations for stations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are yet to be officially announced, developments are underway near Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station in Dubai and along the corridor between Mussafah Industrial Area and Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi.

International Expansion: The Hafeet Rail Project

In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity, the UAE and Oman have initiated the Hafeet Rail project—a joint venture between Etihad Rail, Oman Rail, and Mubadala Investment Company. This 303-kilometer railway will link Sohar in Oman to Al Wathba in Abu Dhabi, integrating with the UAE's national network. Trains on this route are expected to travel at speeds up to 200 km/h, covering the distance in approximately 100 minutes .

Enhanced Passenger Experience

Etihad Rail's passenger trains are designed with comfort and convenience in mind, accommodating up to 400 passengers per train. Amenities will include Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, charging points, and a variety of food and beverage options, ensuring a pleasant journey for all travelers.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The introduction of Etihad Rail's passenger services is anticipated to yield substantial economic benefits, including job creation, increased tourism, and enhanced trade opportunities. Environmentally, the shift from road to rail is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 2.2 million tonnes annually, equivalent to removing up to 375,000 vehicles from the roads.

As the Etihad Rail project progresses towards its 2026 launch, it stands as a testament to the UAE's commitment to sustainable development and regional integration, promising a new era of efficient and eco-friendly transportation for residents and visitors alike.
