Istanbul, Turkey – August 8, 2025 - Foster + Partners has revealed its latest design, Golden Horn Plaza, a luxurious retail destination set along the northern bank of Istanbul’s Golden Horn. The project is a central feature of the broader Tersane masterplan, a 1.6-kilometre redevelopment of underutilized waterfront space aimed at revitalizing one of the city's most historically significant areas.
Nigel Dancey, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners, described the vision as “an integral part of the transformative masterplan for Istanbul’s waterfront. The scale and proportions reflect the city’s maritime industrial heritage, ensuring it is in keeping with the layered historic surroundings. Architecture and landscaping work in harmony to create a year‑round cultural and lifestyle destination.”
Golden Horn Plaza is composed of a series of interconnected pavilions, each offering customizable façades and flexible interiors tailored to high-end retail. Shaded pedestrian walkways, covered terraces, and a cantilevered waterfront restaurant complete the immersive urban experience, offering panoramic views over the Golden Horn.
Sustainability plays a central role in the design. A canopy of native trees, strategic water features, and shaded walkways help enhance thermal comfort and support evaporative cooling. The landscaping draws inspiration from Istanbul’s traditional gardens, blending historical continuity with climate-conscious planning. A new public green square, positioned between the plaza and shoreline, will serve as a venue for year-round cultural programming.
More than a retail destination, Golden Horn Plaza is a landmark of cultural revival and urban sophistication. Nicola Scaranaro, Partner at Foster + Partners, noted: “We are delighted to be working on this project, which will breathe new life into Istanbul’s waterfront with a spectacular luxury retail offering and a range of vibrant public spaces.”
