Vietnam to Build 135,000-Seat World’s Largest Football Stadium

Hanoi, Vietnam: Hanoi is set to host what is poised to become the world’s largest football stadium by spectator capacity, as Vietnam advances construction of the 135,000-seat Trong Dong Stadium. Positioned on the southern outskirts of the capital, the project represents one of the most ambitious sports infrastructure undertakings globally and signals the country’s expanding presence in large-scale urban and architectural development.

Named after the ancient Đông Sơn bronze drums, a powerful symbol of Vietnamese heritage, Trong Dong Stadium is designed to merge cultural identity with contemporary engineering. Once completed, it will surpass current capacity leaders such as North Korea’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium and India’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The architectural language incorporates Lạc bird motifs and visual elements inspired by Đông Sơn drums, embedding national symbolism into a structure defined by scale.

The stadium will feature a retractable roof and a movable pitch system, enabling rapid reconfiguration between football matches, large-scale concerts, and cultural events. These flexible design features align with a global shift toward multipurpose venues that operate as year-round entertainment and civic destinations rather than single-use sports arenas. The movable pitch is expected to retract within hours, while advanced telecommunications and broadcast infrastructure will be integrated from the outset to meet international operational standards.

Trong Dong Stadium forms the centrepiece of Hanoi’s planned Olympic Sports Urban Area, a development spanning more than 9,000 hectares. The broader master plan includes residential zones for approximately 750,000 residents, transport networks, healthcare facilities, and complementary sports infrastructure. With total estimated investment exceeding USD 35–38 billion, the initiative aims to strengthen Hanoi’s global profile and position the city to host major international competitions, including future Asian Games events or Olympic qualifiers.

Groundbreaking commenced in December 2025, with completion targeted for August 2028. If delivered on schedule, Trong Dong Stadium will stand not only as the largest football-specific venue in the world, but also as a landmark expression of Vietnam’s architectural ambition and long-term urban strategy.

As Southeast Asia continues to expand its sports infrastructure, with projects such as Hanoi’s PVF Stadium and Ho Chi Minh City’s Rach Chiec Stadium also underway, Trong Dong distinguishes itself through scale, symbolism, and strategic urban integration. It represents both a technical achievement and a statement of national aspiration on the global stage.
