HNTB Unveils 18,000-Seat Arena for Dallas Stars in Texas

PLANO, TEXAS, USA: Architecture studio HNTB has unveiled designs for a new 18,000-seat arena in Plano, Texas, which is set to become the permanent home of the Dallas Stars National Hockey League (NHL) team.

Planned as the centrepiece of a wider year-round district, the arena will be located alongside the Dallas North Tollway, approximately 20 miles north of the team's current home at the American Airlines Center in Downtown Dallas.

While detailed specifications for the arena have yet to be announced, initial renderings reveal an irregularly shaped venue integrated within a broader mixed-use development comprising mid-rise buildings and a taller office tower.

The design seeks to establish the arena as both a sporting destination and a recognisable part of the surrounding urban environment.

"The most memorable arenas become part of the identity of a city and its people," said HNTB chief design officer Ryan Gedney.

"Our goal is to create a home that is unmistakably rooted in the identity of the Dallas Stars, one that captures the passion and intensity of hockey while reflecting the unique character and culture of north Texas."

Arena to Anchor a Year-Round District

Rather than developing the arena as a standalone sports venue, HNTB's plans position it at the heart of a district designed to remain active throughout the year.

Renderings show the arena embedded within a collection of mid-rise buildings, with a taller office tower adding to the wider development.

Integrating the Dallas Stars into the surrounding community has been identified as a key element of the design strategy, with the project intended to bring together sports, entertainment and everyday activity beyond NHL games.

"Great arenas create unforgettable moments, but the very best become places that communities embrace every day of the year," said Gedney.

"By seamlessly integrating the arena with an active, year-round district, we have an opportunity to establish a new benchmark for how sports, entertainment and community come together to create lasting value for fans, the franchise and the region."

US Sports Teams Invest in New Arenas and Stadiums

The Dallas Stars project joins a series of major new sports venues being planned across the United States.

NFL team Kansas City Chiefs recently released plans for a 70,000-seat stadium designed by Manica, while the Washington Commanders are planning a colonnaded stadium designed by HKS.

For the Dallas Stars, the proposed Plano development represents a move away from the team's current Downtown Dallas venue towards a purpose-designed arena conceived around the identity of the franchise and its integration within a broader mixed-use district.
