Dubai Launches $51.7M Landscaping Push Across Key Roadways

Dubai, UAE - July 20, 2025 - Dubai Municipality has successfully completed a series of large-scale landscaping and beautification projects across key intersections and roads in the city during the first half of 2025. Valued at approximately $51.7 million (AED 190 million), the initiatives span over three million square metres, reinforcing the emirate’s commitment to environmental sustainability and quality urban living as part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Green Dubai initiative.

Greening Dubai’s Gateways

The landscaping efforts covered prominent locations including:

• The Al Khail Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street intersection
• Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Street and Tripoli Street intersection
• Sheikh Rashid Street, from its junction with Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street to Al Mina Road
• Sheikh Zayed Road at the 7th Interchange (main entry from Abu Dhabi)
• Al Khawaneej Street at the Al Amardi Street intersection

Over 300,000 trees and seedlings were planted as part of these projects, alongside 222,500 square metres of ground covers and flowers, transforming urban infrastructure into green corridors. The landscaping design not only enhances visual appeal but also contributes to better air quality and ecological balance.

Tech-Driven Sustainability

All projects were equipped with advanced smart irrigation systems powered by Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. These systems include underground pumps designed to maximize surface usability and are connected to remote-control networks for real-time water-use monitoring. This ensures more efficient and sustainable irrigation management in Dubai’s arid environment.

Aesthetic Harmony and Urban Identity

His Excellency Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the broader goal behind these initiatives, stating:

“Our aim is to reinforce Dubai’s distinctive urban and aesthetic identity and solidify its position as a leading sustainable global city. We seek to offer a vibrant and healthy living environment that upholds the highest standards of quality of life for residents and visitors, while maintaining a harmonious balance between the urban, architectural, and environmental landscape.”

The projects align with the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, particularly its focus on sustainable urban development and the beautification of public spaces.

Enhancing Dubai’s Public Realm

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, noted:

“The landscaping projects were developed in accordance with specific urban and environmental criteria, with a focus on selecting diverse plant species adapted to the local climate. This enhances the beauty and unique character of public spaces. We also increased the planting of native and ornamental species cultivated in Dubai Municipality’s nurseries. In addition, we unified the aesthetic of Dubai’s main entry points by installing similar decorative fencing, using carefully selected colour schemes that reflect the emirate’s identity and provide visitors with a welcoming sense of arrival.”

The plant palette includes both native and ornamental species such as sidr, ghaf, neem, chorisia, washingtonia, royal poinciana, millingtonia, albizia, and bougainvillaea, contributing to a diverse and resilient urban ecosystem.

Architectural Touches & National Pride

In addition to the greenery, Dubai Municipality integrated distinctive visual features at several sites. Notably, the Al Khail Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street intersection now features vertical lighting structures inspired by traditional Arab architecture. These lights are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and shift colors to mark national events, highlighting Dubai’s commitment to cultural identity and modern design.

Expanding the Urban Forest

As of Q1 2025, Dubai Municipality manages:

• 5.5 million trees and seedlings
• 8.7 million square metres of green areas
• 2 million square metres of seasonal flowers
• 6.3 million square metres of ground covers
• 1.3 million linear metres of plant fencing

In 2024 alone, the city planted 216,500 trees, an average of 600 new trees per day. Total green space increased to 391.5 hectares in 2024, up from 234 hectares in 2023.

These accomplishments underscore Dubai Municipality’s commitment to making the city not only more beautiful, but more livable, sustainable, and resilient.
