Dubai Hosts First Future of Construction Legathon at Emirates Towers

The event focused on regulatory and legislative challenges linked to the adoption of emerging construction technologies in Dubai and on developing practical approaches that support innovation while maintaining governance and compliance requirements.

Legathon focuses on future building regulations

Participants examined regulatory challenges surrounding new construction technologies and considered approaches for future building regulations and licensing requirements.

The initiative also aims to strengthen cooperation between government entities and the private sector and increase industry participation in developing regulatory approaches for emerging technologies.

Maryam Al Muhairi, CEO of the Buildings Regulation and Permits Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the initiative is intended to create clearer pathways for new technologies to be examined, tested and evaluated while maintaining governance and compliance standards.

Dubai Municipality and Dubai Future Foundation sign agreement

The event also included the signing of a cooperation agreement between Dubai Municipality and Dubai Future Foundation.

The agreement establishes a framework for regulatory experimentation through Sandbox Dubai, initially focusing on the Smart Built Environment sandbox group. The cooperation can later expand into other areas agreed by the two organisations.

Dubai Municipality and Dubai Future Foundation will jointly develop experimental use cases, including objectives, success indicators and evaluation criteria.

Dubai Municipality will coordinate the relevant technical departments and set requirements and controls for assessing construction technologies and pilot projects. Dubai Future Foundation will support coordination and documentation through the Sandbox Dubai platform.

Testing to inform future regulatory frameworks

Evidence and lessons generated through the experiments will be assessed to inform future policy recommendations and regulatory frameworks.

Where technologies or approaches are successfully validated, the two entities will also consider opportunities for wider adoption or replication in Dubai.

The cooperation will also involve innovators, start-ups, scale-ups and local and international technology providers, providing channels for technologies, products and business models to be demonstrated, tested and assessed.

Workshops, training programmes and knowledge-sharing initiatives are also planned as part of the cooperation.
