Dubai Municipality has approved an ambitious $177 million (AED 650 million) redevelopment of the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary. The project will be executed in two phases, with the first phase—budgeted at $27 million (AED 100 million), set for completion by the end of 2026. This transformation aims to elevate the sanctuary into a world-class ecological and tourism destination.

A Sanctuary Reimagined

Upon completion, the sanctuary will span approximately 6.4 km². The area of water bodies will more than double to 74 hectares, while mangrove coverage will increase by 60%. Additionally, 10 hectares of new mudflats will be introduced, further enriching the sanctuary’s biodiversity and enhancing its natural capacity to absorb carbon dioxide.

Currently home to nearly 450 species of plants and animals, including over 20,000 migratory birds and a thriving flamingo population, the sanctuary is poised to become a leading international eco-tourism attraction.

Infrastructure & Visitor Experience

The project also includes significant upgrades to infrastructure. Water bodies will expand by 144%, and new irrigation networks will be installed. The second phase will introduce a visitor centre, 5.6 km of cycling paths, and 3 km of nature trails. These additions aim to improve public access, support educational programmes, and provide engaging, nature-based experiences.

Global Recognition & Sustainability

Ras Al Khor, first established in 1998 and recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland since 2007, is one of the few urban wildlife reserves of its kind. The redevelopment reinforces Dubai’s strategic vision of sustainable urban development while supporting biodiversity, climate resilience, and carbon offsetting efforts.

Leadership Statement

Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said the development represents "a major milestone in the preservation of natural reserves." He emphasized that the project showcases Dubai’s commitment to environmental sustainability through forward-thinking, innovative practices.

Long-Term Impact

This revitalization not only strengthens Dubai’s eco-tourism credentials but also improves the city’s environmental resilience. By enhancing wetlands and expanding mangrove forests, the sanctuary will help mitigate floods, purify air, and provide critical carbon capture. Combined with the improved public infrastructure, the sanctuary is set to become a cornerstone of environmental education and conservation.
