The reopening will take place with an international friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, serving as a key test event for the upgraded venue just over two months before the tournament begins.
Widely regarded as one of the most historic football stadiums in the world, Azteca Stadium is undergoing a comprehensive transformation to meet modern FIFA requirements and enhance the overall spectator experience.
Renovation works have included the installation of a hybrid playing surface, upgraded seating across multiple sections, modernised locker room facilities, improved lighting systems, and the introduction of advanced digital infrastructure, including large-format video screens and enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity.
Construction teams have been working to complete the initial phase of the redevelopment ahead of the reopening date, with further works scheduled to continue in the lead-up to the tournament.

These include upgrades to surrounding road networks, pedestrian areas and drainage systems, alongside enhancements to public transport connectivity, particularly the light rail network serving the stadium.
The improvements are designed to ensure efficient access and mobility for fans, while supporting the broader operational requirements of hosting a global sporting event of this scale.
The reopening represents a critical step in Mexico’s preparations as one of the host nations for the FIFA World Cup 2026, which will be jointly staged with the United States and Canada.
Azteca Stadium is scheduled to host the tournament’s opening match on June 11, where Mexico is expected to begin its campaign, along with several additional fixtures throughout the competition.
Once reopened, the stadium will achieve a unique milestone in football history, becoming the first venue to host matches across three FIFA World Cup tournaments, having previously staged games in 1970 and 1986.
The redevelopment of Azteca Stadium not only preserves its historic legacy but also positions it as a modern, world-class venue capable of delivering a new generation of global sporting events.
