Amazon has revealed a landmark $10 billion investment in Richmond County, North Carolina, aimed at building a next-generation campus focused on cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative is expected to create at least 500 high-skilled jobs while supporting thousands more through construction, infrastructure, and regional supply chains.
The development is one of the most significant economic investments in the state’s history and marks a turning point for a region once dominated by textile manufacturing.
The new campus will serve as a hub for AI and cloud services, housing cutting-edge data centers filled with servers, networking gear, and storage infrastructure. In addition to permanent tech jobs for engineers, operations managers, and cybersecurity professionals, the project will also deliver thousands of temporary roles tied to construction and logistics.
To support long-term success, Amazon will partner with North Carolina universities, community colleges, and workforce development agencies. These collaborations will establish targeted training programs, particularly in data center operations and broadband infrastructure, designed to help local residents gain access to in-demand digital skills.
The project will bring major improvements to Richmond County’s infrastructure, including enhancements to water and wastewater systems, and the expansion of fiber optic networks. Importantly, these upgrades will be funded without increasing the burden on taxpayers.
County officials have approved a performance-based incentives package, offering Amazon annual cash grants over a 20-year period tied directly to job creation and investment milestones.
David Zapolsky, Amazon’s Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, described the move as a transformative step for the region and the state.
“This investment will position North Carolina as a hub for cutting-edge technology, create hundreds of high-skilled jobs, and drive significant economic growth.”
North Carolina Governor Josh Stein praised the project’s alignment with the state’s vision for innovation.
“Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work and innovate, and I am pleased that North Carolina will stay at the forefront.”
Amazon has already invested over $12 billion in North Carolina since 2010, supporting more than 24,000 jobs across the state. The new Richmond County campus reaffirms Amazon’s long-term commitment to fueling economic opportunity and technological progress throughout the region.
