Adrian Smith

Adrian Smith is widely recognized as one of the leading architects in contemporary high-rise design, with a body of work that has contributed to some of the most prominent skyscrapers in the world. Best known for his association with the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building globally, Smith has played a significant role in shaping the evolution of supertall architecture over the past several decades. Based in Chicago, Smith built much of his early career at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), where he was involved in the design of major large-scale projects across different regions. His work during this period helped establish his reputation in the field of tall buildings, combining structural clarity with refined architectural expression.

Burj Khalifa is widely recognized for its engineering innovation and its role in setting new benchmarks for height and structural design. Smith is also associated with the Jeddah Tower project in Saudi Arabia, which has been planned as a next-generation supertall development, as well as Central Park Tower in New York, one of the tallest residential buildings in the world. He has co-founded Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), a firm focused on high-performance, sustainable design. Through this practice, Smith has continued to contribute to projects that explore the future of vertical urban development, with an emphasis on environmental performance and long-term efficiency.
