Bruno Guélaff

Founder & Design Director
Company:Studio Bruno Guelaff
Nationality:French
Residence:Dubai, UAE

Bruno Guélaff’s design journey began with an understanding of people before it became an exploration of space. Born in New York City and educated at the Lycée Français de New York, he developed an early sensitivity to culture, identity, and human behavior. His academic foundation in sociology continues to shape his approach to architecture and design, giving his work a deeply human dimension.

Before shaping architecture, he studied people. Emotional dynamics, social systems, and the subtle ways environments influence behavior became central to his thinking. This perspective remains one of the defining qualities of his work, whether he is designing a custom residence, a waterfront development, or a supertall tower.

Bruno Guélaff reflects,

“It is always an honor,” “and a humbling responsibility, that through design we influence how people feel inside a space.”

This sense of responsibility anchors his practice. For Bruno, design begins with empathy, lifestyle, and the emotional experience of the people who will inhabit a space.

Bruno Guélaff’s education at NYSID culminated in earning the B.F.A. Travel Prize, an experience that reinforced his belief that design carries cultural and civic responsibility. Travel expanded his understanding of structural clarity, proportion, and timeless restraint, while exposure to historic urban environments strengthened his conviction that architecture and interior design must be conceived as one continuous narrative.

He does not define himself narrowly as an architect or interior designer. Bruno operates as a designer in the holistic sense, integrating architecture, interiors, lighting design, and landscape architecture into a unified spatial vision. For him, design is both structural and emotional.

Every project Bruno undertakes begins from the inside outward. Lifestyle defines layout. Movement defines structure. Light defines atmosphere. Architecture, interior design, lighting, and landscape are developed simultaneously, allowing each project to unfold as a complete spatial experience.

Materials are selected with discipline. Stone, concrete, timber, and glass are orchestrated to create calm continuity. His spaces are restrained yet powerful, with proportion used as a psychological instrument.

Bruno Guélaff notes:

"When proportion is correct, people feel balanced before they understand why."

This inside-out methodology ensures that even projects of significant scale retain emotional intimacy.

In 2008, Bruno relocated to Dubai during a defining moment in the city’s evolution. Dubai was rising vertically and positioning itself globally. Rather than launching independently at once, he entered through consultancy roles, studying market dynamics and identifying where disciplined design could distinguish itself from spectacle.

Dubai was building ambitiously. Bruno sought to build meaningfully.

Studio Bruno Guelaff was established as a boutique design practice rooted in high-end custom residences. Early villas emphasized spatial generosity, emotional resonance, and architectural continuity. Over time, the studio expanded into hospitality and large-scale developments while maintaining its design-centered ethos.

Today, the studio’s work ranges from bespoke homes of 20,000 to over 100,000 square feet to landmark residential towers and waterfront districts. Architecture, interior design, lighting design, and landscape architecture are conceived as one language. Regardless of scale, every project begins with lifestyle, privacy, and emotional pull.

To safeguard design intent through execution, Bruno co-founded BG Group alongside Khalid Kaluti and Simon Dzeletovic. BG Group operates as a fully integrated design and build company, enabling projects to move seamlessly from concept to construction. This structure ensures alignment, precision, and continuity.

At the same time, Bruno Guélaff and Studio Bruno Guelaff continue to undertake design-only commissions. The design and build platform strengthens delivery capability without compromising creative independence. For Bruno, vertical integration is not an operational convenience. It is a strategic framework that protects the integrity of design.

Bruno Guélaff’s portfolio spans intimate private residences and transformative urban projects. Custom villas remain fundamental to his identity as a designer. These homes are shaped around family dynamics, privacy gradients, and daily rituals. They are crafted from the inside out, ensuring architecture reflects lifestyle rather than imposing upon it.

Simultaneously, Studio Bruno Guelaff is advancing major residential developments, including a landmark project on Dubai Islands and work on a residential tower exceeding 450 meters in height. Projects such as The Chedi Private Residences demonstrate how hospitality principles can elevate permanent living.

Across typologies, the methodology remains consistent: emotion first, structure second, spectacle last.

Bruno believes that meaningful design must outlast trends. Structural clarity, disciplined proportion, and material authenticity anchor his projects against time. Excess is edited. Permanence is prioritized.

he says:

“Good design should improve with age,” “If a space feels stronger after years of living in it, then it has succeeded.”

This philosophy applies equally to a 20,000-square-foot private estate and a supertall urban landmark.

Bruno Guélaff’s progression in the UAE has been marked by recognition across disciplines. Individual projects first received distinction, followed by wider recognition for the studio’s work, including Boutique Design Studio of the Year, Boutique Firm of the Year, Interior Design Firm of the Year, Architectural Firm of the Year, and ultimately Architect of the Year.

These awards span architecture, interiors, and integrated design, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of his practice and cementing his presence within the region.

As Dubai continues to redefine its global architectural narrative, Bruno Guélaff’s trajectory bridges bespoke estates and skyline-defining towers. Through Studio Bruno Guelaff and BG Group’s design and build ecosystem, he contributes to both intimate living environments and landmark developments.

Yet at every scale, his work begins with the same principle: design is about people.

For Bruno Guélaff, architecture, interiors, lighting, and landscape are unified tools for shaping emotion, lifestyle, and belonging. Design is not spectacle. It is the quiet power of influencing how people feel within space.
