Western Power transmission infrastructure in Western Australia, where UGL will deliver works for the Clean Energy Link - East programme. (Image source: Western Power)Perth, Australia - CIMIC Group company UGL has secured three work packages expected to generate about $332 million (A$478 million) in revenue as part of Western Power’s Clean Energy Link - East programme in Western Australia.
The project is being developed to strengthen the transmission network east of Collie and create additional capacity for new renewable energy generation.
UGL’s scope includes expansion of the 330kV Shotts Terminal, enabling works around the Muja Terminal and construction of new high-capacity 330kV transmission lines linking Muja, Shotts and Cordering.
The package will deliver four new transmission circuits designed to increase network capacity and support future electricity demand.
Western Power says the wider first stage of Clean Energy Link - East will include a new 330kV terminal at Cordering, upgrades to the Muja and Shotts terminals and new transmission infrastructure between Collie and Darkan. The programme is expected to unlock around 2.3GW of renewable energy capacity, enough to match the electricity use of about one million homes.
UGL is one of several contractors appointed to the programme, alongside Acciona and GenusPlus. Western Power expects the project to support up to 600 jobs at the peak of construction.
CIMIC Group CEO Jason Spears said: “As Australia accelerates its transition to a lower-carbon future, the need for large-scale transmission infrastructure has never been greater.”
UGL Managing Director Sam Goldsmith said: “UGL is proud to continue supporting Western Power on one of Western Australia’s largest infrastructure transformations in its history.”
Western Power is progressing Clean Energy Link - East in stages as part of a broader expansion of Western Australia’s transmission system. The programme is intended to connect additional wind and solar generation while strengthening reliability as the state moves toward the retirement of state-owned coal generation by 2030.
UGL said work under its awarded packages is expected to begin in October 2026. Western Power’s broader programme schedule shows enabling works and major construction progressing in later phases, with Stage 1 targeted for completion by the end of 2029.
