Six Flags Qiddiya City Opens, Marking New Era for Saudi Mega-Projects

Ryiadh, Saudi Arabia: Six Flags Qiddiya City has officially opened on the escarpment outside Riyadh, transforming one of the Kingdom’s most closely watched construction sites into a fully operational, record-breaking theme park and signalling a major milestone in Saudi Arabia’s entertainment-led development strategy.

For years, Six Flags Qiddiya City existed primarily as a vision presented through masterplans and digital renderings. Its opening now marks the first Six Flags destination in Saudi Arabia and establishes the park as a flagship asset within Qiddiya City, the vast entertainment, gaming, and sports destination taking shape on the outskirts of the capital.

From masterplan to delivery

Central to the project’s delivery was Qiddiya Investment Company, which awarded the main construction contract, valued at approximately USD 1.0 billion (SAR 3.75 billion), to a joint venture between Bouygues Bâtiment International and Almabani General Contractors.

Construction works commenced in late 2021 on a challenging plateau site, requiring extensive early-stage earthworks, including cut-and-fill operations and the construction of major retaining structures along the escarpment edge. These preparatory works laid the groundwork for the complex vertical and horizontal development that followed.

Engineering complexity at scale

With the site prepared, delivery moved into deep foundations, structural works, and large-scale infrastructure installation. Utilities, internal roads, back-of-house facilities, and ride platforms were developed in tightly coordinated phases, requiring millimetre-level precision to accommodate the park’s dense layout and technical demands.

Among the most prominent engineering challenges was Falcon’s Flight, the park’s signature attraction. The ride required specialised cliff-edge foundations, complex steel fabrication, and the precise installation of track sections that now form the world’s tallest, fastest, and longest roller coaster. Its completion stands as a defining technical achievement within the project.

A fully realised destination

Across the 32-hectare site, contractors and specialist suppliers delivered 28 rides and attractions, supported by themed architecture spanning six distinct lands. The development also includes extensive retail and food and beverage offerings, completing a fully immersive guest environment designed to support high visitor volumes and extended stays.
