(Image source: WAM)Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - Saudi Arabia and the UAE have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at advancing railway connectivity between the two countries and strengthening wider infrastructure and energy integration.
The agreement was signed in Riyadh on 8 October by Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Saudi Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, and Mohamed Hassan Alsuwaidi, UAE Minister of Investment.
A key element of the MoU is the development of principles for future railway connectivity between Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The two sides will carry out technical and economic studies to assess potential links and support the movement and transit of goods and commodities across the border.
The rail component is intended to improve logistics integration, strengthen supply-chain efficiency and facilitate cross-border trade and transport between the two countries.
The agreement does not announce a construction contract, route alignment, project value or delivery timetable at this stage. Instead, it establishes a framework for further studies and coordination before any future rail infrastructure is developed.
The MoU also extends beyond transport infrastructure to electricity connectivity. Saudi Arabia and the UAE will examine opportunities for electrical interconnection, electricity exchange and sales, supported by technical, economic and environmental feasibility studies.
Both countries will also coordinate with other Gulf Cooperation Council member states on the possible expansion of the GCC electricity interconnection system, with the aim of improving energy-system efficiency and regional connectivity.
The agreement reflects a broader push across the Gulf to strengthen cross-border transport, logistics and energy infrastructure as governments invest in more integrated regional networks.
For the construction sector, the railway element is particularly significant because any future physical connection between the Saudi and UAE rail networks would require substantial planning, engineering and infrastructure development.
The current MoU represents an early-stage step in that process, with further technical and economic assessments expected to determine how the proposed connectivity could be implemented.
