RMJM unveils Salmani-inspired mixed-use project in Riyadh

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: RMJM, has unveiled the design for a new mixed-use development in Al Qairawan, Riyadh, conceived as a contemporary response to local culture, climate and urban scale.

The project draws on Salmani design principles, a modern architectural language grounded in Saudi Arabia’s heritage, translating traditional values into a refined, contemporary urban expression suited to Riyadh’s evolving skyline.

Facade-led design enhances climate performance

The architecture adopts a facade-driven strategy informed by Salmani design, incorporating layered volumes, vertical fins, perforated screens and deep reveals. According to RMJM, these elements are carefully calibrated to enhance solar control, create visual depth and improve environmental performance, responding directly to Riyadh’s climatic conditions.

This approach allows the building envelope to function as both an aesthetic and environmental tool, balancing contemporary form with passive design strategies that support long-term efficiency and occupant comfort.

Layered volumes shape urban rhythm

Rather than presenting a singular architectural mass, the development is articulated into multiple volumes that introduce rhythm, permeability and variation across the site. This compositional strategy strengthens the project’s relationship with its surroundings, allowing it to integrate more naturally into the existing urban fabric of Al Qairawan.

The varied massing also supports better daylight penetration and creates a dynamic streetscape that responds to both pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Public spaces and pedestrian connectivity

Public and semi-public spaces are integrated at podium and street levels, reinforcing walkability, shade and human comfort. These spaces are designed to activate the ground plane, encourage social interaction and strengthen the project’s connection to the wider neighbourhood.

By prioritising pedestrian experience and shaded outdoor areas, the development aligns with Riyadh’s broader urban objectives focused on livability and community-centric design.
