Google Maps adds AI assistant and immersive 3D navigation. Image: Ask MapsGoogle has unveiled one of the most significant updates to Google Maps in more than a decade, introducing new artificial intelligence capabilities designed to transform the platform into a more intelligent and interactive navigation and discovery tool.
The update brings two major features to the widely used mapping service: Ask Maps, an AI-powered conversational assistant integrated directly into the application, and Immersive Navigation, a new 3D navigation interface designed to make directions more intuitive and visually realistic.
Together, the features aim to evolve Google Maps from a traditional navigation application into a smart travel and exploration platform powered by artificial intelligence.
The new capabilities are powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, enabling the platform to understand natural language queries and deliver more personalised navigation, recommendations, and route planning. The update is currently rolling out on Android and iOS devices, with initial availability in the United States and India, before expanding to additional regions globally.
One of the most prominent additions is Ask Maps, a conversational AI tool embedded within the Google Maps interface. The feature allows users to interact with the platform using natural language rather than relying solely on keyword-based searches.
For example, users can ask questions such as:
“Find quiet cafes with charging points near me.”
“Plan a scenic road trip with intriguing stops.”
“Where can I get vegan food along my route?”
Using artificial intelligence, the system analyses a combination of location data, user preferences, reviews, images, and existing Google Maps information to deliver personalised responses and recommendations.
Ask Maps functions similarly to an intelligent travel guide. It can help users discover destinations, organise travel routes, recommend restaurants or attractions, and explain why specific locations or routes are suggested.
Over time, the AI assistant also learns from user behaviour and preferences. For example, if a user frequently visits vegetarian restaurants or outdoor destinations, the system adapts its suggestions accordingly, making recommendations increasingly relevant and personalised.
The way you use Google Maps will never be the same.

Alongside AI-powered discovery features, Google has also redesigned the visual navigation experience through Immersive Navigation, a new interface that replaces the traditional flat map with a more realistic 3D representation of the surrounding environment.
The updated system displays roads, buildings, intersections, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, and overpasses in a detailed three-dimensional format designed to closely resemble real-world conditions.
This visual approach is intended to help drivers better understand complex road layouts, particularly in dense urban areas. Instead of following a simple navigation line, users can view a more realistic preview of how intersections, highway exits, and junctions will appear before reaching them.
The feature also introduces dynamic camera angles and smart zoom capabilities, which automatically adjust the viewing perspective as drivers approach complicated intersections or road transitions. These adjustments allow drivers to anticipate lane changes and navigation instructions more clearly.
The system is powered by Google’s extensive dataset of Street View imagery and aerial photography, combined with artificial intelligence technologies that generate detailed digital models of real-world environments.
Google is also enhancing voice navigation with more conversational and clearer guidance, helping drivers follow directions more naturally while keeping their focus on the road.
The improvements are designed to provide more intuitive instructions and smarter route adjustments, enabling users to navigate complex journeys with greater confidence.
With the integration of AI-driven recommendations and immersive mapping technology, the latest Google Maps update represents a major step forward in how users explore cities, plan trips, and navigate daily travel.
