China’s High-Speed Rail Network Passes 50,000km Milestone

China’s high-speed rail network surpasses 50,000km, strengthening nationwide connectivity and reinforcing its global leadership in rail infrastructure.

BEIJING, CHINA: China has marked a major milestone in global transport infrastructure with its high-speed rail (HSR) network now exceeding 50,000 kilometres in operation, following the launch of the Xi’an–Yan’an high-speed railway, according to information released by China Railway and reported by Global Times.

The expansion cements China’s position as the world’s largest high-speed rail operator, with total operational mileage surpassing the combined networks of all other countries. China also leads globally in terms of commercial operating speeds, reinforcing its status as the most advanced high-speed rail system in service today.

Nationwide Coverage And Urban Connectivity

China’s high-speed rail services now reach 97 percent of cities with an urban population exceeding 500,000, dramatically reshaping domestic mobility. Within a 500-kilometre radius, major urban clusters have effectively formed one- to two-hour travel circles, while journeys of approximately 1,000 kilometres are typically completed within four hours. Longer routes of up to 2,000 kilometres are increasingly enabling same-day return travel.

At peak capacity, the network can transport up to 16 million passengers in a single day, equivalent to the population of a major global metropolis moving through the system, according to China Railway.

Xi’an–Yan’an Line Enhances Regional Access

The newly launched Xi’an–Yan’an high-speed railway extends 299 kilometres across Shaanxi Province, connecting Xi’an with Weinan, Tongchuan and Yan’an. Designed for a maximum operating speed of 350 kilometres per hour, the line reduces the fastest travel time between Xi’an and Yan’an to just 68 minutes, cutting journey duration by more than an hour compared to conventional rail services, as reported by China Central Television.

During its initial phase, up to 38 electric multiple unit (EMU) trains will operate daily across 10 stations, significantly strengthening regional connectivity in northwest China.

Rapid Expansion Under The 14th Five-Year Plan

Since the start of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), approximately 12,000 kilometres of high-speed rail have been constructed and brought into operation. Total network mileage has grown by around 32 percent compared to the end of 2020, extending HSR access to 128 counties nationwide.

This expansion has played a pivotal role in accelerating the movement of people, capital and information between cities, supporting the development of integrated economic corridors and enhancing regional competitiveness, analysts noted.

Technological Leadership And Next-Generation Trains

China’s leadership in high-speed rail is underpinned by a comprehensive technological ecosystem spanning engineering design, rolling stock manufacturing and operational management. At the end of 2024, the country unveiled the prototype of the CR450 EMU, a next-generation train designed for 400-kilometre-per-hour-class operation.

During testing, the CR450 achieved a record relative passing speed of 896 kilometres per hour between two EMU trains, setting a new global benchmark. Key performance indicators, including energy efficiency, braking distance and interior noise control, are regarded as internationally leading.

As China continues to scale its high-speed rail ambitions, the network is increasingly viewed not only as a transport system but as a strategic driver of economic integration, regional development and technological advancement on a global scale.
