Bahrain Accelerates Muharraq Redevelopment with Infrastructure Upgrades

MANAMA, BAHRAIN – Bahrain is accelerating the redevelopment of Muharraq through a series of infrastructure and public realm projects aimed at preserving the city's historic character while enhancing its urban environment.

The programme follows directives from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve Bahrain's historical and cultural identity, as well as instructions from His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to implement the executive plan for the development of Muharraq City.

As part of the initiative, Ibrahim bin Hassan Al Hawaj, Bahrain's Minister of Works, toured several ongoing projects to review construction progress and assess implementation.

Among the key developments are the Muharraq Gate project at the entrance to Shaikh Abdulla Avenue, together with the redevelopment of Shaikh Abdulla Avenue and Shaikh Isa Avenue surrounding Isa Al Kabeer Palace.

According to the Ministry of Works, the projects are designed to preserve Muharraq's architectural heritage while modernising essential infrastructure across the city.

The redevelopment programme includes road improvements, upgrades to stormwater drainage, sewerage and utility networks, as well as enhancements to streetscapes, public lighting, commercial signage, landscaping and parking facilities, in coordination with the relevant government authorities.

The minister also inspected progress on the redevelopment of Shaikh Hamad Avenue, stretching from the entrance of Muharraq Souq to Shaikh Isa Avenue.

The works include the construction of two multi-storey car parks providing a combined capacity of more than 300 parking spaces, alongside additional parking facilities across the district to improve accessibility.

During the visit, Al Hawaj reviewed the upcoming phases of the redevelopment programme and stressed the importance of close coordination between government entities to ensure projects are delivered according to the approved schedule while maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

The redevelopment forms part of Bahrain's broader strategy to revitalise Muharraq as one of the Kingdom's most historically significant cities, balancing heritage preservation with modern infrastructure to enhance the quality of urban life.
