Doha, Qatar - Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started construction on the second package of the Roads and Infrastructure Development Project in Izghawa and Al Thumaid, with works valued at approximately $114.8 million (QAR418 million).
The programme forms part of Ashghal’s wider efforts to expand road and utility capacity in the two districts as residential and urban development continues.
The package is designed to provide integrated infrastructure services for approximately 771 plots, alongside schools, mosques, commercial centres and other service facilities.
Project Engineer at Ashghal’s Roads Projects Department, Eng. Tamader Al Mass, said the works represent an important stage in completing infrastructure development across Izghawa and Al Thumaid and will help accommodate future population and urban growth.
The project includes approximately 23km of new and upgraded roads, together with 30km of pedestrian and cycling paths.
Road-related works will also include 589 street-lighting poles, around 2,730 parking spaces, traffic signs, road markings and other road-safety measures.
A substantial portion of the programme is focused on underground infrastructure.
Ashghal will construct approximately 23km of rainwater drainage networks, as well as 6km of treated sewage effluent networks that will support irrigation across about 171,650 sq m of landscaped areas.
The package also includes approximately 15km of drainage networks.
Alongside the transport and utility works, the project is intended to improve connections with surrounding major roads, support smoother traffic movement and introduce sustainable infrastructure measures designed to expand green areas and protect environmental quality.
The construction zone covers approximately 600,000 sq m, extending between Al Dawakhil Street to the east, National Day Ceremonial Road to the north and Al Khor Road to the south.
To limit disruption during construction, Ashghal has divided the works into three geographical areas. Construction will progress sequentially through each zone, with traffic-management measures implemented to maintain access and vehicle movement while works are under way.
The project is part of Ashghal’s continuing programme to strengthen local infrastructure and road networks as development expands across Qatar’s residential districts.
