ABU DHABI, UAE – Abu Dhabi is set to strengthen its position as a global entertainment and cultural destination with the development of Sphere Abu Dhabi, a landmark venue planned for Yas Island at an estimated construction cost of $1.7 billion.

The project is being developed through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co., marking the first Sphere venue to be built outside the United States.

Located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Sphere Abu Dhabi will be positioned within landscaped surroundings and close to Yas Island’s established network of leisure, hospitality, retail, and entertainment attractions. Construction is targeted for completion by the end of 2029.

Global entertainment expansion

The announcement marks a major step in the international expansion of the Sphere concept, following the opening of its Las Vegas venue in September 2023.

For Abu Dhabi, the project adds another high-profile cultural and entertainment asset to Yas Island, reinforcing the emirate’s strategy to attract global visitors, creators, investors, and major live events.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said the project reflects the emirate’s long-term vision and openness to international collaboration.

He described the investment as a clear signal of Abu Dhabi’s ambition and openness to the world, rooted in strong global partnerships and a commitment to placing Emirati culture, talent, and storytelling on an international stage.

“Together, we are creating a venue that will draw our community, visitors, creators and investors to Yas Island and Abu Dhabi for decades to come,” he said.

Immersive venue on Yas Island

James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, described Abu Dhabi as a natural home for the next Sphere venue, citing the city’s world-class infrastructure, cultural importance, and global standing.

He said Sphere Abu Dhabi represents the first step in building a truly global network of immersive venues.

The venue is expected to host three main categories of events. These include Sphere Experiences, the company’s signature multi-sensory productions; concert residencies featuring regional Arabic artists and international performers; and large-scale brand and marquee events, including product launches and combat sports.

With a flexible capacity of up to 20,000 people, Sphere Abu Dhabi is being designed to accommodate a wide range of event formats, from cultural productions and live music to major international showcases.

Emirati culture on a global stage

Culturally, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to serve as a platform for Emirati heritage and creative expression.

Plans include original Sphere Experiences rooted in Emirati culture, as well as the display of Emirati artwork on the Exosphere, the venue’s iconic spherical LED exterior.

The approach mirrors the wider ambition behind the project: to combine global entertainment technology with local cultural identity, creating a venue that is both internationally recognisable and distinctly connected to Abu Dhabi.

Sphere Abu Dhabi will benefit from a strategic location on Yas Island, one of the UAE capital’s most important tourism and entertainment districts.

The venue will sit a short drive from Zayed International Airport and near major attractions including Yas Mall, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World Yas Island, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, and Etihad Arena.

Its location also gives the project strong visibility during the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, one of the emirate’s most globally watched events.

As a new architectural and entertainment landmark, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to become a prominent visual feature of Yas Island and a major addition to the island’s event-led tourism ecosystem.

Abu Dhabi’s growing landmark portfolio

The project joins a wider pipeline of major developments shaping Abu Dhabi’s cultural, tourism, and leisure landscape.

These include the continued development of the Saadiyat Cultural District and the planned Disney theme park resort on Yas Island, both of which support the emirate’s ambition to become a leading global destination for culture, entertainment, and family tourism.

Once operational, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to generate thousands of permanent jobs and support broader economic activity across hospitality, events, tourism, transport, and creative industries.

Infrastructure coordination is already underway, with entities including Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Energy, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar working together to support road access, transport links, and wider site development.

The project underlines Abu Dhabi’s continued investment in destination-building, combining cultural storytelling, immersive technology, international partnerships, and large-scale infrastructure to support the emirate’s next phase of growth.
