Proposed road and interchange upgrades in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi, designed to improve traffic flow and strengthen connections with surrounding districts. (Image source: DMT)Abu Dhabi, UAE - Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport has announced a major upgrade of the road network in Mussafah, with works planned across approximately 13 kilometres along E30 and 8th Street.
The project is designed to improve movement between Mussafah Industrial Area, Mohamed Bin Zayed City and Zayed City, while reducing congestion and shortening travel times for commuters and businesses.
A central element of the scheme will be a new free-flowing highway along 8th Street with three lanes in each direction.
Three additional lanes will also be provided on either side of the highway to serve shops and other local destinations, separating local access traffic from through movements.
Once completed, 8th Street is expected to handle approximately 4,000 vehicles per hour.
The wider programme also includes upgrades to four interchanges along E30, improvements to connections with 8th Street and E20, and modifications to nine major junctions.
Two new bridges are planned between Mussafah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City, alongside a dedicated pedestrian bridge.
Engineer Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director-General of Infrastructure Development at DMT, said: “Mussafah’s road network serves residents travelling to work, businesses moving goods and people making local journeys throughout the day. Planning for these different needs is essential to the area’s continued growth.”
The project is intended to separate through traffic from local movements while improving access to neighbouring communities and commercial areas.
Al Mazrouei added that the network is also being planned with future connections in mind, allowing current infrastructure works to support Abu Dhabi’s longer-term transport requirements.
The Mussafah improvements form part of a broader programme of road and transport development across the emirate as Abu Dhabi continues to expand capacity across key residential, industrial and commercial corridors.

The partnership aims to connect Saudi companies and investors with Asian growth markets.
