(Image source: Strabag)Prague, Czech Republic - A consortium comprising Strabag, Ferrovial subsidiary Cintra, Budimex and Invesis has secured a €2.9 billion public-private partnership covering a 52km section of the D35 motorway in the eastern Czech Republic.
The 28-year agreement includes the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of a new motorway section between Opatovec, Staré Město and Mohelnice, as well as the operation and maintenance of an existing stretch between Litomyšl and Opatovec.
Around 35.4km of new motorway will be built under the contract.
Construction will be carried out by a joint venture between Budimex and Strabag.
The new section will be developed as a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction and will include two twin-tube tunnels, measuring approximately 4km and 1.3km in length.
The scheme will also include two service areas and an additional connection to the I/35 road.
Once completed, the corridor will improve links between Bohemia and Moravia while easing pressure on the existing I/35 and D1 routes.
The project is the largest transport PPP awarded in the Czech Republic to date, making it one of the country’s most significant current road infrastructure programmes.
Stefan Kratochwill, Chief Executive of Strabag, said: “Effective public-private partnerships are key to delivering much-needed infrastructure more quickly and efficiently.”
He added: “Together with our partners and drawing on our many years’ experience in complex transport infrastructure and tunnel construction projects, we are fully confident that we can successfully deliver this project.”
The structure of the contract combines long-term infrastructure delivery with private financing and operating responsibilities, extending well beyond the construction phase.
The project will also require specialist tunnelling and civil engineering expertise, particularly across the two major tunnel sections included in the new motorway alignment.
With the PPP now awarded, the D35 programme moves into its next delivery phase as the Czech Republic continues expanding capacity across one of its key east-west transport corridors.
