Sharjah, UAE: His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has reaffirmed that enhancing resident comfort and revitalising Sharjah’s older neighbourhoods remains a top priority for the emirate.
As part of this citywide improvement effort, Sharjah City Municipality has been assigned to modernise established districts, with works including road upgrades, enhanced sewage systems, landscaping and tree planting, and creation of family parks. The programme also includes the identification and regulation of abandoned properties to elevate the overall urban environment.
His Highness confirmed that the Government of Sharjah will fully fund all developmental works, including uniform shop signage upgrades, as part of a comprehensive infrastructure enhancement drive. Current upgrades are focused on Al Qadisiyah, followed by Al Jazat, after completing works in Al Ghwair and Independence Square within Yarmouk district.
Speaking on Sharjah Radio & Television’s “Direct Line” programme, His Highness said:
“The Sharjah City Municipality has been assigned the responsibility of executing a comprehensive modernisation of the older residential neighborhoods. Notably, the municipality has recently completed modernisation efforts in the Al Ghwair area, which included road paving, the enhancement of sewage networks, and the organisation of neglected properties and residences.”
He added that government funding underpins these upgrades:
“Furthermore, we have embarked on the development of the Yarmouk area, which includes the replacement of shop signage with new, standardised designs that embody an elegant aesthetic. Additionally, improvements have been made to Independence Square… along with renovations to the Imam Al Nawawi Mosque.”
The Ruler emphasized continued improvements to road conditions, especially areas affected by weather and age. New water drainage systems have already been installed in key zones including Martyrs’ Square, with additional works underway in Al Qadisiyah and Al Jazat to address abandoned structures and enhance green spaces.
These enhancements aim to improve quality of life, pedestrian experience, and environmental safety across Sharjah’s residential communities.
His Highness encouraged residents to participate in the emirate’s greening initiative:
“We encourage individuals to cultivate trees in their homes and enjoy the shade they provide. We offer trees at no cost, and all municipalities procure them from the nurseries located at Al Badi Palace.”
Sharjah currently produces five million saplings, including species such as the lush Beach Mallow, planted around key cultural areas like Kalba mosques. The Ruler noted the environmental and psychological benefits of greenery:
“Trees absorb harmful carbon dioxide and supply the oxygen necessary for human respiration… offering a natural alternative to contemporary electronic devices.”
Sharjah’s modernization programme aligns with its long-standing vision to preserve community heritage while enhancing infrastructure, greenery, and liveability across the emirate. Residents can expect continued improvements and new leisure and community spaces as the government advances its development agenda.
