His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. SHARJAH, UAE – Sharjah is progressing with one of its largest infrastructure initiatives as advanced stages have been completed on the ‘Middle Line Project’ for draining rainwater and groundwater, originally approved in 2024 at a cost of AED500 million ($136 million).
The project is being implemented under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and forms a key part of the emirate’s long-term strategy to strengthen urban resilience and infrastructure capacity.
According to Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the Sharjah Public Works Department, the project has moved into advanced implementation stages and has already exceeded its initial budget, reflecting the scale and technical complexity of the works.
Al Suwaidi said the drainage line extends at depths ranging from 13 metres to more than 20 metres, highlighting the significant engineering requirements involved in delivering a system capable of managing large volumes of rainwater and groundwater across densely developed urban areas.
The first phase of the project will serve 22 areas across the city, with plans to expand coverage to 42 areas, extending to the Muwaileh district. Completion is scheduled for February 2027.

Key roads set to benefit from the project include King Abdulaziz Street, the Al Wahda Road extension to Cultural Square, King Faisal Street, and the Corniche area, including Al Majaz 2, in addition to surrounding secondary roads.
The total length of the drainage network is expected to reach approximately 16 kilometres, significantly enhancing Sharjah’s stormwater management capabilities while reducing flood risks across the emirate.
The project reflects Sharjah’s continued investment in large-scale infrastructure aimed at improving service efficiency, supporting urban growth and ensuring long-term sustainability, particularly as cities across the region place greater emphasis on climate resilience and integrated water management systems.
